Case History

A man in his 60’s had a severe rash. It was very itchy and was like small sores or ulcers especially on his arms and legs. He had been treated by the dermatologist with an immunosuppressant drug and his white blood cell count had gone so low that the drug had to be stopped. After discussions it seemed clear that this man had a lot of occupational exposure and home exposure to heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead, etc.). We went ahead and treated him with a mild nonprescription chelating agent (DMSA/dimethylsuccinic acid; also called Captomer) without even testing. Within a matter of days the rash showed signs of clearing and in weeks was gone completely. A hair analysis can be used as a screening test for heavy metals, or a 24 hour urine collection for heavy metals can also be done (with or without a dose of chelating agent). Many labs are available for doing hair analysis: . I use either Genova Diagnostics or Metametrix for the 24 hour urine collection.

An engineer in his 40’s had brain fog so severe he had trouble forming sentences. I was sure I would soon be filling out disability papers for him as I couldn’t imagine he could function in his job much longer. A 24 hour urine collection revealed elevated mercury levels. After several weeks of chelation with DMSA his thinking was essentially back to normal.

A 35 year old hospital worker had a non-itchy red raised follicular rash on his body. A hair analysis showed extremely high levels of iodine. When he stopped using Betadine antiseptic scrub the rash went away.

A 40 year old professional with tingling, burning, and numbness in her limbs was concerned about MS but MRI and EMG were normal. Her symptoms disappeared when she avoided the foods to which she was having immune reactions. These can be measured in the serum (IgG antibodies) or a test called the MRT can be done. That test measures the release of immune mediators of all descriptions (antibodies, histamine, cytokines, etc.) so is more inclusive than an antibody test. I use primarily Meridian Valley Lab for the antibody testing and Signet Lab for the MRT.

An 11 year old boy with severe recurrent mouth sores (canker sores) and diarrhea found to be reacting to milk products. Symptoms only recurred if he would have milk or milk products.

A 46 year old woman was virtually crippled with rheumatoid arthritis from stiffness, swelling and pain. In 6 weeks after removing cow’s milk products and gluten products from her diet she was pain, stiffness, and swelling free. I have found that all rheumatoid arthritis patients have elevated antibodies to cow’s mild in their blood stream; e.g. they are having an immune reaction to cow’s milk. Each and every one of these people has had a dramatic remission in their symptoms off the milk products. I do not think cow’s milk causes rheumatoid arthritis but these people are certainly better off of it.

45 year old woman with relentless severely itchy hives had been evaluated and treated for allergies with no relief. She was found to have chemical toxicity and treatment with the nutrients she needed to help her body process the chemicals brought about almost immediate relief. Chemical toxicity can be hard to identify as it can cause almost any symptom. Good books to read about this topic are by Sherry Rogers M.D. (“Detox or Die” or “The High Blood Pressure Hoax”) or by Doris Rapp M.D. (“Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call”).

A 14 year old girl complained of severe pain in her hip; it seemed to continually dislocate. Her chiropractor referred her to me for evaluation. She also had some premenstrual symptoms. A saliva test done one week before her period revealed an unmeasurably high level of progesterone. She was using Suave shampoo which on analysis showed very high levels of progesterone. The high levels of progesterone were apparently loosening up the ligaments in this young girls pelvis leading to the hip problems. We have also found that Herbal Essence Shampoo and Paul Mitchell products contain progesterone even though none of these companies list it on their list of ingredients. The lab that I use most for saliva hormone testing is Diagnostechs but I also use Meridian Valley Lab, ZRT, and Neuroscience Lab.

I found a 48 year old woman using Premarin for many years to have estrogen (estradiol) levels in the thousands. Normal should not range above about a 100 for a postmenopausal woman. We stopped her Premarin and found a form of estrogen that did not create such high levels in her system. Several years later however she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This is another example of how important it is to have measurements done of your hormone levels. I found a number of women just like this with extremely high levels of estrogen on Premarin. I believe if levels had been monitored in women taking Premarin it might have proved to be a much safer form of hormone replacement therapy. This is a complicated topic and the answers not unraveled yet as many women on Premarin were also using Provera; an artificial version of progesterone; and this may have contributed to the excess cancer risk as well.

A 48 year old woman had had sleeping difficulties since the birth of her child at age 38. She could fall asleep but would awaken four hours later and be unable to fall back to sleep. She had tried 10 different medications including antidepressants and sleep medications. These had been helpful but all had unwanted side-effects. The night she started bio-identical estrogen she slept soundly for the first time in 10 years. Her palpitations and mild depression disappeared as well. The medications were no longer needed. This is one example of many in which normal functioning has returned in a variety of areas. Many women have been hearing about bioidentical hormones for women and men through the efforts of Suzanne Somers’ books “The Sexy Years” and “Ageless”.
